My first trip to Canada en route Virginia, USA to the state of Nova Scotia, what struck me most was the beautiful landscape, laid back country style pace and friendly non-xenophobia Canadians. There are also many paintings by various artists of their iconic landscapes throughout Nova Scotia. I got a couple of prints myself of the clock tower. While I decided to skip the more touristy Peggy's Cove for a walk around the historical Citadel and an evening Ice hockey game at Scotiabank Centre Sports before heading to Dartmouth for serious business.
Along, 1824 Hollis Street, Halifax, NS, Bluenose II is my favourite places for Breakfast. Patronised too by the many locals whom also have their Brunch here. This lobster Eggs Benedict with English muffin and home-styled fries is my favourite ( photo below).
31 October 2014: One of the best meal I had in Nova Scotia, was along the famous Argyle Street. Five Fisherman. Little did i realised that Five Fisherman is an excellent fine dining restaurant very popular with the locals. Go google the review on TripAdvisor, it will blow you away. I am glad I chose the right restaurant for my meal. The friendly waitress serving me recommended her favourite, the Pan Seared Halibut: cornmeal crusted Sambro halibut served with lobster potato hash and grilled asparagus, accented with a tangerine gastrique and fried caper.
Boy this has to be the best fish i had in my life. The citrus sweet favours of the tangerine gastrique literally burst in your mouth. The fried caper are by no means for decorations. it adds an extra texture and dimension to the perfectly cooked halibut with the grilled asparagus balancing the perfect fish dish.
After my entree, tried the Blueberry Lime Cheesecake. Made with local wild Nova Scotia blueberries, blueberry coulis and Chantilly cream. Lovely...
Definitely a must try if you are in Nova Scotia
Salty's is another great foodie place. Excellent food, dine by the river and pretty decent wine. The only drawback is it;s pretty expensive and the waiter/host isn;t the most friendly. 2 Crab cakes cost CAD19 before tax/tips but they were tasty!!
1 November 2014: I visted Citadel Hill, a National Historic Site of Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In the city of Halifax and one can never miss the distinct Citadell Hill or Fort George.
At noon, you can often hear the Firing of the noon gun at Fort George. It is a sight and experience to behold.
Another landmark you can hardly miss the the old iconic old town clock. It was commissioned in 20 October 1800 by the Prince Edward, Duke prior to his return to England at a location on the east slope of Citadel Hill on Barrack (now Brunswick) Street and has kept time for the community ever since.
And so, I make my way towards the Public Gardens. About 3-4km from where I reside. The famous Public gardens that have inspired so many artists to paint many beautiful paintings of it. Sadly, it was already autumn and slightly drizzling when I got there.
What better way to spent Saturday evening alone in Canada than to go for a local ice hockey match, Make no mistake, the Halifax Mooseheads are 2013 champions!!
HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS VS. MONCTON WILDCATS
2 November 2014: It's Sunday, I moved up across the bridge to Dartmouth for more serious business! I managed to take a short evening stroll at the nearby Spectacle Lake but the freezing temperatures kept in out for 10-15mins max.
